Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Document Scanner

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Document Scanner

The Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Document Scanner is very well designed and you will not feel like you have received an inferior product when you take it out of the box. It's made of a gray "apple-like" plastic (not aluminum) and is well built. The S1500 is extremely compact, much more than what you see in the photos, and doesn't take up much space. In fact, I just put it on my Mac Pro case on the side of my desk and it fits right inside.

The ScanSnap S1500 is very fast and if you want to archive documents as simple images or as searchable PDF files, it is an excellent solution. However, if you try to convert images to text-based documents like Word and Excel using Optical Character Recognition (OCR), you will come across many manual corrections, even if the format conversion is sometimes impressive. The same applies to business card management. Although names and email addresses are generally recognized correctly, CardMinder lacks the capabilities to be the leading card management solution.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Features

The ScanSnap S1500 contains a decent amount of software. You can simply refer to this software as a "set" of tools that improve the S1500. Installing the software was easy, and the default settings seemed pretty well thought out. Once you have the software installed and ready to begin scanning, you can easily load the scanner with a stack of paper (supposedly up to 50 pages), click the scan button, and wait for it to finish. Once your paper has been scanned, ScanSnap Manager starts and gives you options to scan documents to Folder, Email, Print, Mobile Device, Evernote (JPG or PDF), Google Docs, SalesForce Chatter, Word, Excel, iPhoto or Use You can even use the supplied Cardiris business card tool.

This is a shame as the ScanSnap S1500 is the best business card scanner I have tried so far. For the scanning of office documents, this scanner is absolutely excellent thanks to an automatic document feeder compared to flatbed scanners. It also has the advantage of scanning receipts, which in turn is generally not an option for flatbed scanners even with a document feeder.

Overall, we were fairly satisfied with the results of the ABBYY software, although we found a bug where all "I's" became "1". You can find and replace when the software makes mistakes like yours, but things get a little tricky when faced with a situation where you have "I" and "1" in one document.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Performance

Most branded scanners produce images that are very decent (for "archiving"), so speed is often the first thing users look for in a scanner. Fortunately, the ScanSnap is very fast. During my test, I was able to consistently scan 20 pages (letters) at a speed of 20 pages per minute (54 seconds to be precise). 20 ppm means that when scanning in simplex mode, duplex scanning is done at no additional cost and would produce 40 ppm. Interestingly enough, scanning at 300 dpi color or 150 dpi grayscale did not change the scanning speed. However, scanning at 600 dpi color (single sided) was three times slower, with a time of 3 minutes and 15 seconds for the same 20 pages.

The S1500 is pleasant to use and easy to store (the paper trays fold inward into the device to save space when it is not in use). However, we should note that it has some limitations. For starters, we cannot accept large documents in addition to longer legal-sized pages. Since the scanner is designed for 8.5 "x 11" paper (as well as the legal paper mentioned above), it cannot scan anything wider than 8.5 ". While it can scan photos, it doesn't scan them as well as a real photo scanner (we got some visible scan lines with an 8x10 photo we scanned) and converts them to PDF files, not JPEG images. On the other hand, we were impressed with almost everything else, including the evidence, which has been reproduced in great detail.

Conclusion

If you're trying to live the paperless lifestyle I talked about earlier this year and you're looking for a quality scanner that won't kill your pocket, this is the scanner. You can buy a Doxie or another cheaper scanner. However, if you want high performance and a great paperless software package, the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Driver is the place for you. Immediate experience is all it takes to get rid of paper in your work and life.
